On September 11, 2024, the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, in partnership with the FGV Centre for Global Law, welcomed Professor José Alberto Azeredo Lopes, Coordinator of the International Studies Programme in the Master’s in International and European Law at Católica Porto School of Law.

During the event, Professor Azeredo delivered a comprehensive lecture titled "New Challenges to the Use of Force in International Relations: The Limits of International Law in Recent Conflicts, from Ukraine to Palestine." In his lecture, discussions on international law were complemented by a geopolitical analysis of armed conflicts and current tensions involving Russia and Ukraine, as well as Palestine and Israel.

The lecture offered a critical reflection on the concept of the use of force and how this concept has been applied in the International Court of Justice, particularly in the case brought by South Africa against Israel and the case brought by Ukraine against Russia.

Following the lecture, students engaged in a lively discussion, contributing to a critical debate on the new challenges surrounding the enforcement of international law.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Professor Azeredo Lopes for addressing such a timely and important topic with us!
