Brussels Effect

Gabriel Ralile e Lucas Vollers

Centre for Global Law

On April 2nd, 2025, the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, in partnership with the FGV Centre for Global Law, had the honour of welcoming Gabriel Ralile and Lucas Vollers, research assistants at the FGV Centre for Global Law, for a lecture on the Brussels Effect: A Discussion on the EUDR and Alternatives to Dispute Settlement.

In the first part of the lecture, Researcher Gabriel Ralile presented the concept of 'Brussels Effect' as the EU's unilateral power to regulate global markets, highlighting the EU's ability to promulgate regulations that shape global influence. Gabriel also focused on the EU’s due diligence process within the European Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) framework.

In the second part, Lucas Vollers discussed alternative dispute settlement options, analyzing potential clashes between the EUDR and World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. He further explored the Mercosur-EU agreement and detailed the key aspects of international commercial contracts related to EUDR-regulated commodity trade, including potential dispute scenarios.

The information shared by Gabriel and Lucas is part of the research project "Regulating Forests: Monitoring the Impacts of the EUDR," conducted by the Centre for Global Law, which has just released its new policy brief "EUDR’s implementation in Brazil: Addressing Challenges and Fostering Dispute Resolution Alternatives".
