Fábia Fernandes Carvalho
On August 8th, Professor Fábia Fernandes Carvalho from FGV São Paulo School was welcomed at the Rio School on Global Governance, Democracy, and Human Rights.
This event was organized by the FGV Centre of Excellence on EU-Latin America Global Challenges and co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme.
In her lecture titled "International Law in, from, and for Latin America: A Historiographical Approach," Professor Carvalho analyzed international relations within the Latin American context. She explored how these relations fit into the regional reality and how Latin American countries have developed their own theories to interpret global politics.
Professor Carvalho introduced the epistemic framework of the "Third World Approach," which takes into account the colonial past and the internal political developments in former colonies. This presentation was essential for understanding the concept of the Global South.
The lecture was followed by an engaging discussion with students, who actively participated in a debate about the challenges faced by the Global South.
We would like to extend our gratitude to Professor Fábia Fernandes Carvalho for her thought-provoking lecture and for providing an excellent foundation for the discussions we will continue to have at the Rio School.
