On 28 August 2024, the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, in partnership with the FGV Centre for Global Law, welcomed Professor Paulo Emílio Vauthier Borges de Macedo, Professor of International Law at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), to deliver a lecture at the Rio School on Global Governance Democracy and Human Rights.

At the event, Professor Paulo Emílio delivered a comprehensive lecture on 'The Brazilian Constitution in the face of International Law'. Professor Paulo Emílio critically examined the process of reception of international human rights treaties in the Brazilian legal order, as well as the application of such treaties before domestic jurisdictions, with a comparative perspective between Brazil, the United States and France.

The lecture was followed by an engaging discussion with students, who actively participated in the debate about the challenges faced by the Brazilian judiciary when applying international law.

We would like to thank Professor Paulo Emílio Vauthier Borges de Macedo for this very enriching lecture.
