FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU-South America Global Governance

GEM DIAMOND’s Kick-Off Conference, Institut d’études européennes (IEE) de l’Université libre de Bruxelles, Bruxelles

Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida had the honour of participating as an academic institutional representative from the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the GEM DIAMOND’s Kick-Off Conference.

The Conference is held at the Institut d’Études Européennes (IEE) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles for the launch of the latest iteration of the Joint Doctoral Network on Globalisation, Europe and Multilateralism (GEM), led by professor Ramona Coman, with the support of professor Mario Telo, which will assess the EU’s capacity to act given the challenges facing Democratic Institutions, the rise of Alternative MOdels and mounting Normative Dissensus (DIAMOND).

The event reunites professors from 10 prestigious universities (UvA, LUISS, UCPH, UBB, Paris1, UoW, UNIGE, UL, WUT, FGV) and 6 leading non- academic institutions (CEPS, IAI, GMF, PATRIR, FIDH) to join the ULB in subscribing to a shared interdisciplinary research agenda seeking to shed light on the growing dissensus surrounding liberal democracy and the rule of law within and beyond Europe.

As a partner of the consortium led by the Université Libre de Bruxelles and financed by the Marie Curie actions, the FGV will participate in the co-direction of PhD thesis and will issue a joint doctorate degree along with the ULB and LUISS university from Rome.

Professor Paula welcomed Benedetta Arrighini, the PhD student jointly selected by the 3 degree awarding institutions who will be working under the supervision of professor Anne Weyembergh (ULB), Jean-Louis De Brower (Egmont Institute) and myself (FGV).

Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida would like to express her gratitude to Ramona Coman and Frederik Ponjaert for their exceptional leadership and for spearheading such an outstanding project. She also extends her appreciation for their warm welcome extended to all participants at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
