On 29 January 2026, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU-LA Global Challenges (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, delivered a lecture at the 339th Ibero-American Colloquium, hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) in Heidelberg, Germany.

During the lecture, Professor Almeida presented the main findings of the research project “Tales from Latin American States in Advisory Proceedings before the International Court of Justice (LATIN TALES): A Mixed-Method Approach for Grasping State Motivations and Strategy before International Courts and Tribunals”, developed at the FGV Centre for Global Law. The presentation examined how Latin American States strategically construct narratives before the International Court of Justice, drawing on an interdisciplinary mixed-methods approach that combines categorical content analysis of written and oral proceedings, semi-structured interviews with diplomats and legal counsel, and complementary empirical methodologies to identify the strategic motivations underpinning state participation before international courts and tribunals.

The presentation generated an engaging academic discussion with researchers and scholars from the Max Planck Institute, providing valuable theoretical and methodological feedback that contributed to the further development of the LATIN TALES project.

The lecture also marked the continuation of Professor Almeida’s longstanding academic collaboration with the Max Planck Institute. It followed her recent research stay as a Visiting Researcher, supported by the Max Planck Institute and the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and reinforced a partnership spanning more than a decade. This collaboration includes her 2025 research stay, which resulted in the publication of the book Uncovering Global South Narratives in ITLOS Advisory Proceedings on Climate Change: A Mixed-Method Approach for Articulating Political and Legal Arguments, as well as her first research visit to MPIL in 2014, during which she contributed to the edited volume Latin America and the International Court of Justice: Contributions to International Law, co-edited with Professor Jean-Marc Sorel.

Held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online participation, the event further strengthened the long-standing academic dialogue between CPDG and MPIL within the framework of the Ibero-American Colloquium series.
