On 24 March 2026, researchers from the Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU-LA Global Challenges (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, presented their research at the EULAS Conference – Euro-Latin America & Caribbean Cooperation in Governing Climate and Biodiversity and Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

During the panel on the external reception and contestations of the European Green Deal, Mariana Mariani and Leonardo Bortolozzo Rossi presented the paper "The Externalisation of the European Green Deal and South America: EUDR’s Effects and the EU–Mercosur Agreement", co-authored with Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of CPDG and CEJM. The presentation examined the challenges generated by the extraterritorial effects of the European Green Deal in third countries, using Brazil as a case study. It compared two key mechanisms through which the European Union externalises its environmental agenda: the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) and the Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD) Chapter of the EU–Mercosur Agreement. The researchers also presented the findings of their empirical research on the indirect impacts of the EUDR on Brazil's coffee sector, contributing to broader discussions on regulatory externalisation, sustainable trade governance, and environmental regulation.

The panel was moderated by Professor Ricardo Oliveira (PUC-Rio) and also featured presentations by Professor Carolina Pavese (Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia), Professor Gustavo Müller (KU Leuven), Professor Bruno Luciano (UNESP), and Professor Alan Leal (FGV Global Business). The conference provided an important opportunity for academic exchange, constructive feedback, and interdisciplinary debate on the European Union's external environmental governance and its implications for Latin America.
