On May 15, 2025, the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG), in partnership with the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–South America Global Governance, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, welcomed Professor Malcolm Jorgensen, Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, for another edition of CPDG Dialogues.

In his lecture, From International Legal Order to “Geolegal Orders”: The Politics of “Multipolarity” in International Law, Professor Jorgensen examined the contemporary transformation of the international legal order in light of emerging geopolitical dynamics and increasing claims of multipolarity. The presentation explored how states are developing distinct approaches to international law as part of their broader foreign policy strategies, raising questions about the future coherence of the international legal system.

Drawing on his ongoing research at the Max Planck Institute and Humboldt University of Berlin, Professor Jorgensen discussed the concept of Comparative International Legal Policy, analysing how governments use international law to pursue strategic objectives while simultaneously shaping competing visions of global legal order. The lecture also reflected on the implications of these developments for multilateralism, international institutions, and the evolution of international legal governance.

The presentation was followed by an engaging discussion with students, researchers, and members of the academic community on the relationship between law, geopolitics, and the future of international cooperation.
