On 10 October 2025, the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–South America Global Governance, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, in partnership with the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG), hosted another edition of the CPDG In-House Research Seminar, entitled “Discussing TSD Chapters in EU FTAs and EUDR Updates.” The seminar brought together researchers from both Centres and was moderated by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of the CPDG and CEJM.

During the seminar, Pedro Henrique Ortman presented a draft version of the article “Towards Sustainable Trade Governance: Examining Dispute Settlement in the EU’s FTAs with Sustainability Provisions,” currently under development by CPDG researchers. The presentation examined the relationship between international trade and sustainability through the Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD) chapters contained in the European Union’s Free Trade Agreements, with particular emphasis on the enforceability of sustainability commitments and the dispute settlement mechanisms envisaged under the EU–Mercosur Agreement.

The presentation also fostered discussion on recent developments concerning the implementation of the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) and their implications for sustainable trade governance.

The seminar concluded with comments by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, followed by a Q&A session with researchers and participants. The discussion also benefited from remarks by Professor Gustavo Becker, legal researcher at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law, PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Luxembourg (cotutelle), Visiting Professor at FGV Direito Rio, and Visiting Researcher at the CPDG and CEJM.
