On 19 March 2026, the Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU-LA Global Challenges (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, in partnership with FGV Rio Law, hosted another edition of the CPDG In-House Research Seminar. The seminar was dedicated to the discussion of the working paper "The Externalisation of the European Green Deal in South America: EUDR’s Effects and the EU–Mercosur Agreement".

The session opened with a presentation by researchers Mariana Mariani and Leonardo Bortolozzo Rossi, co-authors of the paper together with Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of CPDG and CEJM. The presentation examined the different channels through which the European Green Deal is externalised beyond the European Union, focusing on the interaction between the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) and the EU–Mercosur Agreement. The research explored how unilateral regulatory instruments with extraterritorial effects interact with interregional trade agreements incorporating sustainability commitments, highlighting potential asymmetries in EU–South America environmental relations and contributing to broader debates on regulatory sovereignty, sustainable trade governance, and the legitimacy of the European Union's external regulatory action.

Following the presentation, researchers from CPDG and CEJM engaged in an in-depth discussion, offering comments and suggestions to strengthen the paper's theoretical framework and methodological approach. The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, fostering collaborative debate on the project's ongoing development and its contribution to research on the external dimension of European Union environmental regulation.
