On October 31, 2025, the Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU-LA Global Challenges (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, in partnership with FGV Rio Law, hosted the CPDG Research Seminar entitled Private Dispute Resolution and the Right to an Effective Remedy in Transnational Business and Human Rights. The seminar was presented by Gustavo Becker and moderated by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of both CPDG and CEJM.

During the seminar, Gustavo Becker—legal researcher at the Luxembourg Centre for European Law (formerly the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law), PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Luxembourg (cotutelle), visiting professor at FGV Rio Law, and visiting researcher at CPDG–CEJM—presented the second chapter of his doctoral thesis.

The presentation examined the concept and characteristics of private dispute resolution mechanisms as avenues for ensuring access to remedies in cases involving transnational business-related human rights abuses. It provided a comprehensive overview of private dispute resolution, outlining its theoretical foundations, methodological approach, and the principal findings of the ongoing research.

The seminar concluded with comments by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, followed by an engaging Q&A session with researchers and participants. The discussion addressed topics ranging from the definition of effective remedies and the empirical case studies examined in the research to broader debates on business and human rights and access to justice in transnational contexts.
