Droi et littérature: la sphère juridique internationale dans la littérature

conference-debate

On March 25, the Center for Global Law (CPDG) and the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence on EU-LA Global Challenges (CEJM - co-funded by the European Union), both directed by the professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, hosted the conference-debate "Droi et littérature: la sphère juridique internationale dans la littérature". The event was held entirely in French and was co-organized with the support of the FGV Rio Law's International Relations and Global Cooperation Office, the Master's Program in Law at FGV Rio LAw (PPGD), and the Language and Literature FGV's Program of the Sorbonne.

We were honored to welcome Professor Jean-Marc Sorel, a distinguished public law professor at Sorbonne Law School (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) and President of the French Society for International Law (SFDI). Professor Sorel shared insights from his latest book "Les lectures du monde: La sphère juridique internationale dans la littérature", where he explores how literature perceives and interprets international law. Drawing from a study of nearly 1,000 novels by over 500 authors, he delved into major global legal issues, including diplomacy, borders, colonization, and human rights.

The discussion was opened and moderated by Professor Paula W. Almeida, and Professor Charlotte Riom, associate professor and responsable for the FGV Sorbonne Program. Professor Paula W. Almeida discussed key topics such as the collaboration between the CPDG and the Institut de recherche en droit international et européen de la Sorbonne (IREDIES (Université Paris 1)), where Professor Jean-Marc Sorel previously served as director and continues to conduct his research. She also explored the CPDG's current research project and its connection to the intersection between international law and narratives, as well as the personal dimension of Professor Sorel’s book, which goes beyond academic contributions to offer a heartfelt perspective. Professor Charlotte Riom addressed the relationship between law and literature from an artistic perspective, offering insights into how these disciplines intertwine. Their insightful questions helped shape a deep and engaging debate.

Additionally, we had the privilege of welcoming Professor Tércio Sampaio Ferraz Junior, Emeritus Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and the University of São Paulo, as a commentator. His expertise brought a valuable perspective to the discussion, enriching the analysis of the interplay between law and literature.

The CPDG and the CEJM thank all who attended and contributed to this inspiring event! Stay tuned for more thought-provoking discussions!
