On 10 September 2025, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (CEJM), co-funded by the European Commission under the Erasmus+ programme, participated in the pre-conference workshop of the Annual Conference of the European Society of International Law (ESIL), held at Freie Universität Berlin.

The workshop, organized by the ESIL Interest Group on Social Sciences and International Law and entitled “Interdisciplinarity and the (Re)construction of International Law”, brought together scholars and practitioners from multiple jurisdictions to discuss the role of interdisciplinary approaches in both the theory and practice of international law.

Professor Paula contributed to the panel “Interdisciplinarity in the performance of international law”, alongside Regina Jeffreys (UNSW Sydney), Alice Margaria (University of Zurich), and Konrad Turnbull (University of Groningen). She presented the research project “LATIN TALES ICJ: Latin American Narratives in Advisory Proceedings Before the International Court of Justice”, offering an empirical analysis of narratives advanced by Latin American states before the ICJ in advisory proceedings concerning issues of community interest, including climate change and human rights.

The presentation employed a mixed-method approach combining quantitative and qualitative techniques drawn from linguistics and the social sciences. It forms part of the broader CPDG and CEJM research initiative Tales from Latin American States at International Courts and Tribunals (LATIN TALES), coordinated by Professor Paula and developed by a team of seven researchers.

The workshop was organized by the ESIL Interest Group coordinating committee and served as a key moment of exchange ahead of the ESIL Annual Conference 2025 on the theme “Reconstructing International Law in Response to Global Challenges”.
