On May 30 and June 6, 2025, the Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, hosted another edition of the CPDG In-House Seminar, featuring presentations by researchers Lucas Walmrath, Gabriel Ralile, and Pedro Henrique Ortmann. Both sessions were commented by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of CPDG and CEJM.

On May 30, Lucas Lemos Walmrath delivered an in-depth seminar on process tracing and discourse analysis methodologies, examining their application to empirical research in international law and illustrating their use through examples from his doctoral work and relevant literature. The discussion also addressed broader methodological questions concerning causal inference and interpretive approaches in international legal scholarship. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A and brainstorming exchange among members of the research centre.

On June 6, the seminar continued with presentations by Gabriel Ralile and Pedro Henrique Ortmann on the impacts of the European Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) in Brazil. Gabriel Ralile focused on the EUDR’s new Delegated Act and benchmarking mechanisms, highlighting their implications for regulatory compliance and global supply chain governance. Pedro Ortmann followed with a critical analysis of the article “Will the EU deforestation-free products regulation (EUDR) reduce tropical forest loss? Insights from three producer countries”, focusing on its methodology, assumptions, and empirical contributions.

The seminars fostered an interdisciplinary exchange on methodological innovation and the external dimensions of EU environmental regulation, particularly the socio-legal impacts of the EUDR in producer countries and the broader dynamics of regulatory projection beyond EU borders.
