LATIN TALES Research Seminar – Narratives of Latin American States before the ICJ (iCourts Lunch Seminar)
iCourts – The Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre of Excellence for International Courts at the University of Copenhagen.
On June 11, 2025, the Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, were represented at the Lunch Seminar series hosted by iCourts – The Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre of Excellence for International Courts at the University of Copenhagen.
Vitor Furtado De Melo, researcher at the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–South America Global Governance, FGV Direito Rio, Rio de Janeiro, and the Centre for Global Law (CPDG), presented one of the Centre’s core research initiatives during his 30-day visiting scholarship at iCourts. The presentation was attended by Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of CPDG.
The seminar introduced the research project LATIN TALES – Tales from Latin American States in International Courts and Tribunals, coordinated by Professor Almeida and developed at CPDG. The presentation focused in particular on the LATIN TALES ICJ strand, which examines the narratives advanced by Latin American states in advisory proceedings before the International Court of Justice, especially in cases involving community interests.
The discussion generated rich academic exchange on discourse analysis, the role of legal representatives, and patterns of state participation before the ICJ. Insights and questions were shared by participants, with contributions from both Vitor Furtado De Melo and Professor Almeida.
The Centre for Global Law extends its sincere thanks to Professor Mikael Rask Madsen for hosting the seminar and for the warm welcome extended to Vitor during his research stay in Copenhagen, as well as to the entire iCourts academic community for their engagement and stimulating discussion.
