On July 28, 2025, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and of the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–Latin America Global Challenges (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, participated in the 11th ICON•S Annual Conference, held at the University of Brasília (UnB), Brasília, Brazil.

The conference, themed “At the Crossroads of Public Law: Equality, Climate Emergency, and Democracy in the Digital Era”, provided a forum for comparative and interdisciplinary debates on contemporary challenges in global public law.

Professor Almeida presented her ongoing research project “Tales from Latin American States at International Courts and Tribunals (LATIN TALES) – 2nd phase: Latin American Narratives in Advisory Proceedings before the International Court of Justice (LATIN TALES ICJ)”. The presentation examined how Latin American states construct legal and political narratives before the International Court of Justice in advisory proceedings involving global commons issues such as climate change, decolonization, and international humanitarian law. The project highlights the interaction between law and politics in the production of state arguments and strategies before international courts.

Her panel, titled “Managing threats to democracy in international legal order”, was chaired by Professor Maria Isabel Tavares and included contributions from Professor José Alberto Azeredo Lopes, Francisco Quelhas Lima, as well as PhD researchers Benedetta Arrighini and Rita Preto, who presented their respective works within the panel.

The session contributed to broader reflections on the resilience of democratic principles within evolving international legal orders and the role of narratives in shaping legal interpretation before international tribunals.
