On April 7, 2025, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–South America Global Governance, co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, together with CPDG researcher Lucas Vollers, presented their research at the International Law Association (ILA) Conference Shaping Appropriate ADR in International Law, held at the Università degli Studi di Firenze.

The conference was organised by the ILA Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in International Law, in collaboration with ILA Italy and the Department of Law of the Università degli Studi di Firenze. Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida participated in the event in her capacity as the Brazil-appointed member of the ILA Committee on ADR in International Law.

Their paper, A Nuanced Approach for Assessing ADR's Appropriateness in the Americas: Navigating Between Law and Politics in the Brazilian Legal External Policy, examined how the selection of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in international law is influenced not only by legal considerations but also by broader political and foreign policy objectives. The research analysed the Pact of Bogotá as a regional framework for the peaceful settlement of disputes and used Brazil's foreign legal policy as a case study to explore how states choose among different ADR mechanisms according to the legal, diplomatic, and political context of each dispute.

The presentation contributed to broader discussions on the relationship between law, diplomacy, and dispute settlement in international law, highlighting the importance of contextual approaches when assessing the appropriateness of ADR mechanisms in the Americas.
