On March 17, 2025, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida presented the results of her research project, "The Participation and Narratives of Global South States in the ITLOS Advisory Opinion on Climate Change," funded through the 4th FAPERJ–French Embassy International Mobility Programme, during the Rio–France Connections event held at the BiblioMaison – Bibliothèque de France in Rio de Janeiro.

Developed within the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–Latin America Global Challenges (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, the interdisciplinary project was carried out in collaboration with the Institut de Recherche en Droit International et Européen (IREDIES) at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, particularly with Professor Jean-Marc Sorel.

The research examined the participation and narratives advanced by Global South States during the advisory proceedings before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on climate change. Combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, the project integrates perspectives from international law, international relations, and the social sciences to analyse how states construct legal arguments and strategic narratives before international courts and tribunals.

The Rio–France Connections event also marked the official launch of the 2025 FAPERJ–French Embassy Call for Proposals and brought together researchers selected under the programme, alongside representatives of FAPERJ, the French Embassy in Brazil, and partner institutions, fostering dialogue on international scientific cooperation between Brazil and France.
