On 25 September 2025, Professor Paula Wojcikiewicz Almeida, Director of the FGV Centre for Global Law (CPDG) and the FGV Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on EU–South America Global Governance (CEJM), co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, presented the research project “LATIN TALES ICJ: Latin American Narratives in Advisory Proceedings Before the International Court of Justice” at the Faculty Colloquium of Sciences Po Law School in Paris.

The colloquium featured Aditya Sharma (PhD Candidate, Sciences Po Law School) as discussant and brought together scholars to debate the narratives advanced by Latin American states in advisory proceedings before the International Court of Justice, as well as the broader political dynamics influencing state participation before international courts and tribunals. The discussion provided valuable theoretical and methodological feedback that will contribute to the further development of the project.

Professor Paula’s participation formed part of her research stay as a Visiting Scholar at Sciences Po Law School, funded by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). During this period, she advanced the LATIN TALES project by refining its theoretical framework, expanding its empirical database, and strengthening its mixed-method research design through collaboration with the faculty and researchers at Sciences Po.

The LATIN TALES ICJ project offers an empirical analysis of the narratives advanced by Latin American states before the International Court of Justice in advisory proceedings concerning issues of community interest, including climate change and human rights. The research combines quantitative and qualitative methods drawn from linguistics and the social sciences to examine the interaction between legal argumentation and broader political narratives.
